Kindergarten Line Explorations and First Grade Line Designs
For our first art lesson of the year, Kindergarten and First Grade students focused on different types of lines. We learned the terms horizontal, vertical, and diagonal to describe different straight lines. In addition, we learned how to draw wavy, curly, zig-zag, bumpy, and broken lines by first using our pointer fingers to practice drawing them in the air and then using markers to draw them on large sheets of paper. Kindergarten students learned how to use markers properly (place cap on bottom of marker when drawing and make sure to put the cap on tightly when you are finished). First grade students practiced their listening skills by drawing a vertical, horizontal, and two diagonal lines on their paper to create eight separate sections (similar to a web). They then filled those sections with various types of lines. All students practiced their coloring skills by coloring around and in between their lines.
