First Grade students were introduced to a special art-making process called "printmaking." I gathered a collection of fresh leaves from around the neighborhood and discussed how we could use paint and brushes to create simple prints (monoprints specifically) using the texture of the leaves. We used warm colors (red, orange, and yellow) to paint on the textured side of our leaves. Students realized that there are a few warm/hot objects that are red, orange, and/or yellow...like fire or the sun. After learning to decipher which side had the most texture, students learned to evenly brush on their paint and used a sheet of paper on top of their leaf to rub and thereby create a print. Below are a few photos of students busily printing.

Lets Explore Shapes!
Joan Miró Inspired Figures
First Grade students were introduced to the Spanish artist Joan Miró. They learned that he was a Surrealist, which meant he used his dreams as inspiration for his artwork. We observed Miró's painting People and Dog In Sun and the students discussed all the things they noticed in his artwork. They noted his use of geometric shapes and color and realized that put together they resembled people. We began our project by defining the word texture (the way something feels) and created implied texture by using crayons and rubbing plates to prepare the surface of our paper. Afterward we used black paint and oil pastels to create our Miró inspired figures using various geometric shapes and lines.
First Project of the Year!
Kindergarten Line Explorations and First Grade Line Designs
For our first art lesson of the year, Kindergarten and First Grade students focused on different types of lines. We learned the terms horizontal, vertical, and diagonal to describe different straight lines. In addition, we learned how to draw wavy, curly, zig-zag, bumpy, and broken lines by first using our pointer fingers to practice drawing them in the air and then using markers to draw them on large sheets of paper. Kindergarten students learned how to use markers properly (place cap on bottom of marker when drawing and make sure to put the cap on tightly when you are finished). First grade students practiced their listening skills by drawing a vertical, horizontal, and two diagonal lines on their paper to create eight separate sections (similar to a web). They then filled those sections with various types of lines. All students practiced their coloring skills by coloring around and in between their lines.
